Discover The Wagons in the Black Hills

Nestled in the serene Black Hills of South Dakota, The Wagons offer a unique short-term stay experience like no other. Inspired by and in memory of Mike’s late father, “Papa” Short, this retreat combines rustic charm with modern fun.

The Story Behind The Wagons

When Mike and Mindy Short were featured on Magnolia Network’s "Building Outside the Lines," the show transformed undeveloped acreage into a sanctuary that celebrates Mike’s late father, “Papa” Short with a beautiful Conestoga Wagon equipped to house up to 4 adventurers who desire a unique off-grid experience.

Inspired by the the success, Mike and Mindy decided to buy two more Conestoga Wagons and launch The Wagons just off a meadow where the Short family has enjoyed campfires and long walks for decades.

Now, the opportunity to reconnect with nature and enjoy a nostalgic experience is available for all. The Wagons are easily accessible and are a short walk to hundreds of acres of Black Hills National Forest where you can hike, bikes, ride 4-wheelers, golf, and so much more.

From the cozy covered wagon to the custom-built features, every detail reflects love, creativity, and a deep connection to community.

Where are The Wagons Located?

Where the Trail Leads Home

There’s a reason our wagons feel so right here in the heart of the Black Hills—they’re settled upon the very land where a historic wagon trail once passed through Apple Springs. When you stay with us, you’re not just imagining the pioneer spirit; your adventure begins on the same ground where trailblazers of old sought their own.

Our cozy homestead is nestled perfectly between the legendary outposts of Deadwood and Sturgis. It’s the ideal spot to hang your hat—close enough to explore the historic streets, yet far enough away to hear the whisper of the pines and enjoy the simple joy of a sky full of stars.
